Something is Broken…

ted Learning Theatre of Learning drama based training
I went to school in a small village in Hampshire. It wasn’t particularly large, about 450 pupils. It was a “good” school and I count myself very lucky to have spent seven years there. I left in 2002 and I know of at least six suicides to have taken place in the intervening nineteen years. The last of which happened in October. I don’t know if this statistic is average or not, but here is another statistic…

– Suicide is the single biggest killer in men under 45 in the UK

I find this statistic shocking, but what I find more shocking is the feeling that not too many people know how much of an issue this is in our society. Perhaps calling it a pandemic of its own is an unhelpful comparison, but it is, without doubt, a dark and horrible trend. One of the cruel ironies of the pandemic is that it has driven a rise in isolation and loneliness. Two things that have a profound impact on suicide rates. And yet, simple acts, like picking up the phone, writing a letter (remember those) or video-calling someone can have an equally profound impact. At this time of year, in particular, connecting with those around us is vital. Despite what TV adverts would have you believe, many are struggling and aren’t full of the joys of the season.

My simple act is also going to be a sweaty one. Pounding the streets of Southampton in a half marathon on April 24th raising money for C.A.L.M. Campaign Against Living Miserably.

They are doing brilliant work in both suicide prevention and supporting those affected by suicide. Their website https://www.thecalmzone.net/ has loads of helpful resources, articles and a free helpline open from 5pm to midnight 365 of the year: 0800 58 58 58.

Something is broken, let’s all help fix it.
