What Is Drama-Based Training – And Why Does It Work?

When was the last time a PowerPoint slide changed your behaviour?

If your answer is “never,” you’re not alone. That’s exactly why drama-based training exists—and why it’s gaining serious traction in leadership development, EDI, customer service and interview skills.

At ted Learning, we use professional actors and real-life workplace scenarios to bring learning to life. This isn’t theatre for entertainment—it’s a powerful learning tool that’s immersive, emotional, and, most importantly, memorable.

So, what is drama-based training?

Drama-based training uses scripted or improvised scenes, performed by actors, to simulate common workplace situations. Participants observe the interactions, reflect on the behaviours they see, and often get the chance to intervene, question, or even step into the scenes themselves.

This method turns passive learning into active discovery, helping learners connect emotionally to content in a way that traditional training simply can’t.

Why it works (and what clients gain):

  • It’s highly engaging: Learners are emotionally and cognitively present. They’re not just receiving information—they’re reacting to it.
  • It creates psychological safety: Watching someone else act out a difficult situation allows learners to reflect without feeling exposed.
  • It sticks: Studies show emotional engagement leads to significantly higher knowledge retention.
  • It drives real behaviour change: Because people see the consequences of actions and try new approaches in a risk-free space.

Use cases that make an impact

We’ve used drama-based training to support clients across:

  • Brave Conversations – Helping leaders confidently address conflict, underperformance, or sensitive issues.
  • Inclusive Leadership – Showing managers how bias plays out and what inclusive behaviour really looks like.
  • Interview & Recruitment Skills – Practising real interviews with actors to uncover unconscious bias or missed cues.
  • Customer Service – Bringing empathy and personalisation to life in retail and hospitality settings.
  • Management Development – Exploring how leadership behaviours influence culture and performance.

Real Results – Real Clients

We’ve helped brands like Reiss, Côte Brasserie TGI Fridays, and several Local Authorities use drama-based training to:

  • Launch new values and behavioural standards
  • Tackle diversity and inclusion challenges head-on
  • Improve service delivery across teams
  • Upskill new and emerging leaders in real time

One retail client told us: “Seeing the customer experience played back on stage was like holding up a mirror—we couldn’t unsee it, and that was the point.”

What can drama-based training do for your business?

If you’re looking for:

  • Higher engagement in training
  • Long-term behavioural change
  • A safer way to explore tough workplace conversations
  • Better leadership, service, or inclusion outcomes

…then drama-based training might be the answer.
